The title is such a mouthful and sounds rather tedious.
But let's look at the motivation behind the rather theorised words.
Let's think of the day as a reminder that all Older Persons, were once young and have a life's time of experiences to share with us. Yes they are old now, but as we all grow older with each passing minute, we should realise that one day - we will be old. How will we look? How will we feel? What opinions and values will we have? What clothes will be want to buy/wear? What movies will we want to see? What books will be want to read? What will be our leisure time activities be - considering that our ageing body will not be able to play tennis forever. How will we feel watching our parents/aunts/uncles pass away? How will we cope when our circle of friends begins to diminish? Do we ever think about how the elderly really feel? How will we feel when we are too old to work, too old to play? Can we picture ourselves in a nursing home?
So, Let's use this Day is an opportunity to recognise the contributions older Australians make to their families and communities. As one day we would like our achievements to be recognised. Let's encourage participation by older people in community activities, as one day we would appreciate a little encouragement. Older Australians are, and have always been, an incredible asset, as we will be in times to come. They have helped shape modern Australia and continue to make significant contributions to society with a lifetime of skills, knowledge and experience. Remember that one day it will be us with all of these skills and we too will want to pass them onto our younger generation.
