Emily and her Mum were going to the beach - until the phone rang and Mum had to go to work.  Emily is taken to Grandma's, but "I really wanted to go to the beach".  Grandma comes up with a plan.  With a little imagination, Grandma's back yard is transformed into a beach. Grandma and Emily fish in the rock pool, build sandcastles and enjoy all the fun of the sea side, they even have a donkey ride!

A warm and fuzzy story with illustrations that match the mood of the story.  Though the characters are dogs and not people, the message of good times at Grandma's is easily portrayed.  The author wrote the story from fond memories of staying with her Grandma as a small child.  The text is short, but sweet, with the illustrations capturing the essence of the story.

The Tablelands region is an area covering 64,768 square kilometres of diverse landscapes including world heritage rainforests and crater lakes, expansive savannahs and wetlands, along with a variety of rural and agricultural farming.

Located in Far North Queensland, extending west of Port Douglas, Cairns and Innisfail, there are several major towns including Atherton, Malanda, Mareeba andHerberton. Smaller towns are Ravenshoe, Mt Garnet, Kuranda, Dimbulah, Chillagoe, Mt Molloy, Millaa Millaa, Julatten, Tolga, Walkamin and Yungaburra.

The population of 46,937 (ERP at June 2010) is dispersed across this large, geographically diverse region which is slightly larger than the land mass of Tasmania. 

We have 11 libraries to service our shire Mareeba, Atherton, Ravenshoe, Kuranda, Malanda, Yungaburra, Herberton, Millaa Millaa, Dimbulah, Mt Garnet and Chillagoe.

Two stories that the children can easily relate to - how Grandpa's will not throw anything out!  But it turns out that Grandpa's shorts are rather trendy and his teenage grandchildren think he's really cool when he wears them to the beach.  In the story Grandpa's slippers, Grandma decides that Grandpa needs new slippers - his slippers are old and tatty, but he refuses to get rid of them.  Grandma tries to throw them away, but Grandpa finds them every time - even in the compost heap. Grandma has purchased him some new slippers, but until the old ones literally fall apart he will not even try them on!

What do you view is your role as a grandparent?
When my children were young, my mother and my mother-inlaw were rocks.  They had the children while I worked, played, cleaned - whatever and whenever.  But I look to the future - when I am a grandmother, I will still be working.  How can I help my daughter and my son in the same way my mother and mother inlaw helped me? I guess the answer is - I won't be able to.  If my daughter/son need someone to look after her children, they will have to go to day care as I will be at work.  I would love to have the children, but the mortgage will not let me stay at home.  What is your situation?
